How AP scoring works
Each AP exam is graded out of a raw point total — multiple-choice questions plus the free-response section. The raw score is then converted to an AP score from 1 to 5. The exact cut-points shift slightly each year, so this calculator uses a multi-year average of published distributions.
What scores colleges accept
A 3 is generally considered "passing," but most selective schools award credit only for 4 or 5. Check each college's AP credit policy for the subject you're testing.
